Staff Attorney, United Policyholders

As Staff Attorney for United Policyholders, a national non-profit organization that assists individual consumers and disaster survivors with insurance claim and coverage issues, I have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the ABA YLD Disaster Legal Services (“DLS”) Program. The DLS Program coordinates legal services for communities impacted by natural disasters, bringing together legal aid attorneys, funded by the LSC, to deliver critical services in the wake of disaster.

I joined the DLS team for the 2016-2017 term and will serve as incoming Vice Director of the program for 2017-2018. I have had the privilege of working with ABA staff, legal aid partners, FEMA, and The Red Cross over the past year to deliver legal services to those in need.  I had the unique opportunity to travel to Baton Rouge, LA after the devastating floods in August 2015 to meet with local partners and tour Disaster Recovery Centers where legal aid attorneys had been deployed.

I believe that legal aid attorneys serve an important vital purpose: to provide assistance to those who would not otherwise receive it. From landlord-tenant, to insurance, to domestic violence, LSC-funded legal aid attorneys help remove barriers to the civil justice system. I interact with legal aid attorneys in my day job as well as in my volunteer position with the DLS. Without these heroes, justice would be out of reach for many Americans. I am a Legal Aid Defender, are you?
